Once upon a time, Jack and Jill were relegated to children’s books and
an uphill/downhill existence, but those days are over. This Jack and Jill heard
God’s call and wrote an exciting and honest end-times novel that focuses on
current political and spiritual issues, and how a variety of characters respond
to The Call to Prayer.
Authors Jack L. Kemp and Jill Cohen Walker, redeemed by the blood of
Christ for almost two decades, wrote almost around the clock when each was
experiencing difficult times in the wilderness. Together, they prayed, listened
to God, and produced a novel that is both exciting and all-to-real as the story
of each character unfolds.
In The Call to Prayer, one woman’s petitions to the Lord start a
worldwide harvest of souls. Ranging from the unloving to the lovers of
pleasure, blasphemers to inventors of evil things, they must “choose wisely
this day whom they will serve” in a world that is careening toward the time of
Jacob’s Trouble—the Tribulation—and God’s judgments on all of humanity. Each
chapter involves a new set of characters who are either saved, on the brink of
repenting, or who turn away from the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Some
characters weave through more than one chapter as the Lord’s plan for a sick
and dying world comes to fruition.
“The book is a gift from
God. I lost my job last summer and couldn’t find work,” Jill said. “It was the
Lord who sat me at my computer and told me to write about the human
condition—about men and women who would hear His call and obey, and those who
would not. The more I wrote, the more I prayed for those who don’t know God,
and those who don’t want to know Him.”
Jill called her friend Jack
L. Kemp, who lives in Texas, and asked him to edit her work. He agreed to do
so. Jack had suffered two heart attacks while working full time and attending
nursing school. The first attack occurred in late 2002, the second in early
2003. He was out of work, couldn’t return to work or school without his
doctor’s permission, and couldn’t collect any disability or unemployment
benefits.
“We talked everyday about
the book. I think we saw it as an Esther and Mordecai moment,” Jack said. “The
Lord gave us the stories, and they had to be communicated to others.”
At first, Jill wrote and
Jack edited. Then the Lord showed them they should be co-authors. They created
chapters from Romans 1:29-31 and 2 Timothy 3:2-4. The book was completed in raw
form in ten weeks. When they sought a publisher, they met with delays and a few
rejections. One day, Jill talked with Marlene Empcke, a sister in Christ who
lives in Ohio, about the book. She asked her to pray and Marlene asked if she
could read it. Jill knew she had to obey immediately.
“I e-mailed it to her and
gave her time to read and even edit. She and her husband, Glen, were beyond
supportive,” Jill said. “When they had read just a few chapters, they knew the
book had to be published quickly and became the real publishers through Xulon
Press.”
While the book is fiction,
it includes composites of events that have taken place, are happening, or could
easily happen—a sobering thought for anyone who is concerned with end-times
events and Bible prophecy.
“Christians must take
responsibility for remaining silent on certain issues. That mindset has allowed
our government, especially the judiciary, to remove Christ from the public
square. This tyranny against God’s people has caused the United States to lose
its moral compass,” Jill said. “We, in America, have no excuse. We’ve been
spiritually asleep or too afraid to stand up for righteousness.”
Jack and Jill both saw the
book as a way to warn their brothers and sisters in Christ. They believe many
professing Christians have blinders on when it comes to the character and
agenda of those in elected positions. They don’t vote wisely for public
officials.
“There are political leaders
in this country who have fully embraced evil, just as there are governmental
agencies and non-elected members of prominent organizations that oppose God so
strongly, they encourage and sanction rebellion against Him,” Jack said. “We
must be aware of their godless plans for us, but we must also remember that God
is sovereign over all. There’s nothing that happens that isn’t part of His
plan, and there’s nothing that can’t be overcome by His blood.”
